The World English Bible (WEB) is a revised and updated version of the American Standard Version (1901). This free Bible translation is unique in that it is one of the few modern-English translations of the entire Bible that is in the public domain. The WEB was created by volunteers on the ebible.org project and edited by Rainbow Missions, Inc., a Colorado nonprofit corporation.
The WEB prides itself on being one of the few English-language Bibles that is custom translated to be easily understood by English-speakers worldwide, eliminating the need for language-specific internationalizations. The project began in 1997 under the name American Standard Version 1997. Its goal was to produce a modern English Bible version that is not copyrighted, does not use archaic English like the King James Version, and is not translated in Basic English like the Bible In Basic English. While it follows the American Standard Version's decision to transliterate the Tetragrammaton, it updates "Jehovah" to "Yahweh" in order to reflect modern scholarship. However, the British and Messianic Names editions retain the traditional forms.
In addition to the canonical books of the Bible, the WEB also includes several Apocryphal books. These include Tobit, Judith, Additions to Esther, Wisdom (also known as Wisdom of Solomon), Ecclesiasticus (or Sirach), Baruch, Epistle of Jeremy (or Letter of Jeremy), Prayer of Azarias, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, I Maccabees, II Maccabees, 1 Esdras, Prayer of Manasses, Psalm 151, III Maccabees, IV Maccabees, and 2 Esdras.
Translation-wise, WEB is based on the 1901 American Standard Version as well as the Greek Majority Text and the Hebrew Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Minor adjustments were made based on alternate readings found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Septuagint, although these alternate readings are typically relegated to footnotes. Each book in the WEB goes through seven passes of editing and proofreading, with an initial automated pass to update archaic words and phrases, followed by manual passes to add punctuation and ensure accuracy against the Greek and Hebrew texts.
